DC Is going all-in on ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ for its 40th anniversary all year long

DC is honoring the legacy of ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ with a year-long celebration spanning new publishing initiatives, creator retrospectives, and more.

DC is going big for the 40th anniversary of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, with plans taking place all year long.

First published in 1986, Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns reshaped modern Batman storytelling plus helped redefine exactly what superhero comics could be. Adult, edgy, dark, and then some.

The anniversary festivities officially kick off this February this week at ComicsPro in Glendale, California, where Frank Miller and Klaus Janson will reunite for a special panel considering the legacy and impact of the series. It is the first of several planned events spotlighting the creators and the book that changed everything.

On the publishing side, DC will roll out monthly facsimile editions of The Dark Knight Returns #1 through #4 beginning in February. These editions faithfully reproduce the authentic 1986 single issues, complete with vintage ads and back matter. For readers who never held the authentic floppies, this is about as close as you can get to stepping back into that era.

Later this summer, DC will debut a slate of 40th anniversary variant covers, with top artists paying tribute to Miller’s unmistakable visuals. Expect a range of interpretations that nod to the book’s influence while putting fresh spins on some of its most iconic imagery.

April 7, 2026, brings another new format: Batman: The Dark Knight Returns: DC Compact Comics Edition. The smaller, portable size is part of DC’s push to make its most essential stories more accessible for readers on the go. It is a smart way to introduce this landmark Batman story to a new generation.

Merchandise will have a big role in the celebration as well. DC Shop is launching an Artist Collection focused on The Dark Knight Returns, featuring apparel and collectibles inspired directly by the art. Highlights include a commemorative jacket, a limited hand-numbered art print created in partnership with Sideshow Collectibles, graphic tees, a hoodie, a duffle bag, and more.

The anniversary year will culminate on Batman Day 2026 with a new Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Deluxe Edition hardcover. This remastered premium volume aims to offer a definitive presentation of one of the most influential graphic novels ever produced.

DC has promised more announcements throughout 2026, suggesting the 40th anniversary celebration is not nearly over. For a story that helped redefine Batman for the modern era, a full year of recognition feels entirely fitting.
