Tradewatch: exciting bookshelf editions for the week of 03/04/26

Climate Activism, Roberta Gregory, Lobo, Wally Wood, and the X-Men.

There is a veritable flood of new comics every week: new issues, variant covers, new #1s, and fresh-faced miniseries. Fewer – but still bountiful – are the dozens of bookshelf editions landing in your local comic shops (and attainable by your local indie bookshops, as well!). From fresh original graphic novels, long-awaited archive editions, and collections of recent comics for all you trade-waiters, there are plenty of trade paperbacks and hardcovers to fill your shelves.

After reviewing hundreds of these sorts of books for AIPT over the years, I’ve come to appreciate what makes a collection truly special. Here at Tradewatch, I pick five books releasing in the coming week that seem the most exciting to me. Here are my picks for the week of March 4th, 2026!

A Better World is Possible

First Second Books, TPB – $18.99 (Buy Now)

As climate change quickens―bringing with it extreme weather, biodiversity loss, and humanitarian crises―four teens help organize the world’s largest climate protest. Hundreds of thousands join them, taking to the streets of New York City and demanding answers. How did climate change get this bad? Who’s to blame? And most importantly: What can we do about it?

This vibrant, hopeful book seems to be a true story of activism and optimism – which, I think we can all agree, is a necessary balm to our current doomscrolling era. Written by a noted climate journalist, the book will likely bring a sharp, smart view to the teenager’s lives and the subject of climate activism. It might not all be good news, but at least it’s hopeful news.

Bitchy! The Exasperating Existence of Midge McCracken

Fantagraphics, HC – $74.99 (Buy Now)

Tradewatch: exciting bookshelf editions for the week of 03/04/26

Midge McCracken is the abrasive, self-destructive pessimist every office has. Not to mince words, she’s a bitch: bitter, mistrustful, racist, and completely unfiltered in her words and thoughts. But she comes by it honestly, growing up with hateful, racist parents, suffering sexual abuse as an adolescent, experiencing an unwanted pregnancy, etc. Did we mention that this is a comedy?

Examining a whole life of a crude, angry woman as she rants and raves through banal life experiences seems like it might not be for everyone, and I’m sure Bitchy is not for everyone. Under all its hyperbolic anger and manic energy appears to be a sort of earnest catalog of real-life experience: the life of a woman at her worst imagined self, experiencing the ways of the world through a very particular lens.

Lobo: Back to Back

DC Comics, TPB – $19.99 (Buy Now)

If you’ve ever wondered how Lobo got his reputation as the biggest, baddest bounty hunter the universe has ever known, this book shows you why the Last Czarnian is the last person you want to be on the wrong side of.

With Supergirl arriving in a remarkably short amount of time, it’s prime time for readers to get to know Lobo, who began with a sliver of seriousness in the early ’80s before devolving into a sort of parody of trends from that era. This book is often cited as the Lobo book, the book that best idealizes the character and his tone; it’ll be hard to find a better encapsulation of the character before seeing him reimagined in live action.

Wally Wood’s EC Stories Artist’s Edition Expanded

Image Comics, HC – $195 (Buy Now)

Tradewatch: exciting bookshelf editions for the week of 03/04/26

Discover an all-new look at the work of the legendary Wally Wood as he helped change the face of comics forever at EC Comics, the groundbreaking publisher known for their industry leading horror, sci-fi, and suspense storytelling!

So many of the artists who worked on the original EC Comics were true masters of illustration, and Wally Wood (whose work also appeared in magazines from Marvel, DC, Archie, and others) is no different. His EC work has an undeniable sense of heightened reality, all weird world and human energy. This collection will be a great chance to look at it up close.

X-Men Epic Collection: Lonely Are the Hunted

Marvel Comics, TPB – $54.99 (Buy Now)

Tradewatch: exciting bookshelf editions for the week of 03/04/26

Join the original X-Men – Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Angel and Iceman – in adventures from the days when Marvel’s merry mutants were more the quirkiest quintet in comics than the worldwide wunderkinds they are today.

Back before it became one of the most influential and popular super-team books of all time, X-Men was in danger of fading into obscurity. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby had let the book go on to a new crew of creators (Roy Thomas, Don Heck, Werner Roth, and George Tuska are listed on the cover of this volume) who struggled to keep up with the book’s better-selling contemporaries. These issues, from 1966 through 1968, preceded the fall: the book would eventually enter a phase of reprints before (thankfully) being revived by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum in Giant-Size X-Men seven years later. These stories aren’t of the caliber readers can expect from the later Claremont era, but they are hokey, campy, and bizarre in a way all their own.
