AIPT can exclusively reveal preview pages from Lost Fantasy #9, arriving April 15, and the issue promises to expand the series in big, unexpected ways.
The main story teases the arrival of the Cyber-Ronin, a dangerous new adversary hunting the hunters, while Henry is still recovering from the devastating events of the previous arc. But the issue also packs a major punch in its backup, as co-writer Timmy Heague helps introduce Bombshell, a new character with deep ties to Henry’s past.
Heague told me earlier this week the story digs into a key moment readers have only heard about before. “This is a flashback to helping explain how Henry had a favor to call in,” Heague said. “We’ve crafted what that favor was and how it connects to Sidney Stevens.”
That character, also known as Bombshell, quickly became the creative team’s playground. “We were like, okay, she’s got to have a giant bazooka. She’s also got to have a giant sword,” Heague said. “And then we just locked in on it. Bazooka sword.”
Bombshell is designed as a high-energy counterpoint to Henry, with a history that adds emotional texture to the chaos. “She’s an old flame,” Heague explained. “They can’t stand each other, but they love each other at the same time. They’ll never commit to each other. It’s great.”
Visually, the backup leans hard into spectacle, thanks to artist Eamon Winkle. Heague described the approach as “very big, loud, and just fun action-packed comics,” while still staying true to the world Curt Pires and Luca Casalanguida have built.
And yes, the issue delivers on sheer comic book insanity.
“My favorite moment is the reveal that they’re fighting Nazi dinosaurs,” Heague said. “There always needs to be a Nazi-killing book on the shelf.”
That mix of grindhouse energy, fantasy lore, and character-driven storytelling is key to how the team approaches the series. “It’s Rocketeer and Hellboy energy,” Heague said, “but grounded in the rules of Lost Fantasy.”
With Fireborn also launching the same day and tying directly into the universe, Lost Fantasy #9 is shaping up to be a major chapter for the expanding world.
As Heague put it best: “It’s a big, explosive, action-packed comic with giant swords, bazookas, and Nazi dinosaurs.”
Lost Fantasy #9 hits comic shops April 15.
But wait, there’s more. Stay tuned as my conversation with Heague, including what it’s like breaking into comics as a comic shop owner, comes to the AIPT Comics podcast on March 29th!
