Spider-Monkey Superhero?! Art Baltazar unleashes Webster’s wild origin story after 20+ years

‘Webster the Spider Monkey: Spectacular Amazement’ goes on sale May 5, 2026.

Welcome to the ever-growing Aw Yeah Comics universe, and the very first solo adventure and secret origin of Webster the Spider Monkey!

Arriving this spring from Papercutz and Mad Cave Studios, Webster the Spider Monkey: Spectacular Amazement marks the character’s debut graphic novel. This story follows Webster, a lab monkey turned superhero, in a world filled with mutations, chaos, and unexpected responsibility.

The book is written, illustrated, and lettered by award-winning cartoonist Art Baltazar (Tiny Titans, Itty Bitty Hellboy, Superman Family Adventures). It delivers a mix of humor, heart, and action aimed at a new generation of middle-grade readers.

Webster’s origin begins when he eats a radioactive bug and is caught in a lab explosion alongside other animals. While the blast mutates the others into dangerous creatures, Webster survives and gains superpowers. Now a hero, he sets out to protect what remains of his friends, even as some may be beyond saving. Along the way, he faces off against villains like Doctor Octoplatypus, the Ninja Monkeys, the Shizzlerd, and the returning Rhinoceros Jack.

Art Baltazar shared his excitement about bringing the character to life:

“Wow! The moment is finally here! Webster the Spider Monkey in his very own graphic novel! Webster is a character I created around 2000 or 2001 (around the same time as Gillbert), and he is a welcoming addition to the ever-expanding Aw Yeah Comics universe! He looks a little different from how he looked in 2000. Originally, he was a parody character, but soon his own lore began to develop around him. So naturally, I had to have him meet up and team up with the legendary Action Cat! Webster the Spider Monkey has been in my mind and in my sketchbook for years. I am always thinking about his universe and his stories and characters and villains and stuff. I have so many ideas for him, I couldn’t fit them all in this first volume. Ha! He was even created before Action Cat. Wow, time flies. I can’t wait to unleash him on the masses! AW YEAH!!!”

While the story leans into wild, cartoon-style action, it also explores themes of survival and responsibility. Baltazar brings energy and personality to Webster’s journey, blending playful storytelling with emotional stakes.

Webster the Spider Monkey: Spectacular Amazement goes on sale May 5, 2026, in both paperback ($12.99) and hardcover ($17.99). The 88-page graphic novel is aimed at readers ages 7 to 12 and will be available through comic shops, bookstores, and Papercutz directly.
