Lono returns as ‘100 Bullets’ enters its most dangerous chapter yet with ‘The US of Anger’ #1

Azzarello and Risso reunite for a new series that drops Lono into a volatile, all-too-familiar version of America.

On July 1, Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso reunite for 100 Bullets: The US of Anger #1, kicking off a new eight-issue limited series that brings their crime saga back into focus. Speaking as someone who was obsessed with the series when it was wrapping up its epic run, the new series feels like a treat.

Set in the aftermath of the original series, the story follows Lono, who survived the fall of the Trust and has spent years far from home. Loop Hughes, one of the few who managed to walk away clean, finds his life upended when violence catches up to him. That draws Lono back across the border, and he is not returning quietly. The series drops him into a volatile landscape filled with militias, megachurches, wealth, and extremism, with trouble never far behind.

Announced at NYCC last October, Azzarello said the series will feature “Lots of blood, blood, blood,” adding, “Some characters are coming back, though not many of them lived the first time.”

100 Bullets has remained one of the defining crime comics of the modern era, known for pushing Vertigo’s identity and raising the bar for long-form storytelling in the medium. This new chapter builds on that foundation while shifting the focus to a present-day setting that feels closer to reality than ever.

The story also picks up threads from Brother Lono, where the character tried to change course and failed. Here, he becomes something else entirely, moving through a country already on edge and stirring up what is already there. The series will be presented in black and white, giving Risso’s art a sharper, more stripped-down look that fits the tone.

The debut issue is written by Azzarello with art by Risso, lettering by Clem Robins, and a main cover by Dave Johnson. Variant covers include work from Frank Miller, Jock, and Risso. The 40-page first issue arrives July 1, priced at $3.99, with cardstock variants available for $4.99.

The book is part of DC’s expanding Vertigo lineup, which continues to roll out new creator-driven titles throughout 2026. Upcoming series include Black Tower: The Raven Conspiracy by Ram V and Mike Perkins, The Crying Doll by Mariko Tamaki and Rosemary Valero-O’Connell, A Walking Shadow by Simon Spurrier and Aaron Campbell, Fanatic by Grace Ellis and Hannah Templer, and Necretaceous by Tom Taylor and Darick Robertson.
