‘Baby Garfield’ #2 continues the cuteness and chaos

See how Garfield came to love lasagna and hate Mondays.

Baby Garfield has two more “firsts” in this issue: his first Monday and his first lasagna. The stories aren’t being told in order, as we saw Odie and Baby Garfield eating lasagna in issue #1, but that doesn’t really affect the story as these are self-contained stories that don’t affect the other stories in the issue.

In Baby Garfield’s First Monday, we see the origin of why he hates Mondays. Garfield initially hates Mondays as he was used to hanging out with Jon all day over the weekend but Jon returns to work on Monday. He ends up wrecking havoc during the week and getting mad at Jon during the weekend. Jon ends up getting Garfield a present to keep him company during the week, which turns out to be Odie. As most of us know, Garfield isn’t the biggest fan of Odie, and the combination of being introduced to Odie on a Monday and having Jon leave Garfield with him all day on Monday explains why Garfield really hates Mondays.

We also get to see when Baby Garfield had his first lasagna, which is a very cute story. The format of story is a little bit different as it’s told as a flashback when Garfield is telling Odie about his first lasagna. Similar to the first story, Garfield is just causing chaos and really making life difficult for Jon after he takes away Garfield’s chocolate chip cookies. He is refusing to eat anything that Jon gives him and even tears up his fridge looking for his cookies. The only reason he eats the lasagna is because he mistakes it for another sweet treat. The entire time he’s telling this story, Odie is eyeing his lasagna and Garfield is not willing to share.

Both Stephanie Cooke and Brittney Williams write very cute stories that can appeal to all audiences. Although they are different from the classic Garfield comic strips, they still have the feel of a Garfield comic. Whitney Gardner’s art resembles the comic strips a little more than Williams’ art, but I personally prefer Williams style as Garfield and Odie look more like babies.

Baby Garfield #2 continues to show us the chaos he causes in a cute story for all ages.
