‘Uncanny X-Men’ #28 offers reveals, action, and escalating danger

A weird, action-packed issue that delivers answers while raising the stakes across multiple fronts.

Events in Uncanny X-Men #28 feel tantamount to the entire run. Meanwhile, the series continues to lean into the weird with the Outliers and a batch of New Mutants who showed up at Haven House. Between all three plots, there must be some connection that drives your interest as some answers are revealed, and the danger level at Graymalkin prison is higher than ever.

In the last issue, I was pondering why Corina Ellis and her boyfriend Scurvy were such a strong focus, but in Uncanny X-Men #28, it’s made very clear where that story thread was headed in the first few pages. A satisfying opening with some answers, the scene also reminds us of some key mutants stuck in the prison who will likely play a part next issue. Things are heating up in the prison, folks, and it’s time to grab this series if you dropped it! Not only that, a character referenced way back in Uncanny X-Men #4 is an important factor.

While the opening plot does come back around, much of this issue is about the Outliers getting their bearings in the “Somewhere, Somewhen.” This seems like an alternate reality where Sauron is the professor leading the school for the X-Men, and the Outliers are seemingly new recruits. And yet, the Outliers have no memory of training there. Thanks to Mutina, key information is relayed to the team and the reader, setting up a major turn with plenty of action.

That action pops off wonderfully thanks to art by Luciano Vecchio, with an epic power-up from Jitter, and Deathdream pulling off a near full-page splash reveal of powers that make them practically a butterfly of death. Throw in a shocking death, and it’s a tense sequence that moves the plot forward.

About midway through the issue, we check back in with Rogue, who is trying to make sense of why Wolfsbane, Sunspot, Cannonball, Moonstar, and Karma are in her kitchen. Given that they told Rogue they are being trained to kill the Avengers, something is not right, and they’re very aggressive in this issue. So much so, things escalate quickly with a major attack that puts Rogue in grave danger. Fans of classic X-Men will enjoy this twisted version of the New Mutants, although their role is less important ot this issue. Instead, fans of Gambit will be pleased with a lot more of him here.

Not all the weirdness necessarily gets cleaned up, but there are enough answers in this issue to satiate fans. Trusting writer Gail Simone, much more will likely be revealed going forward. It’s too bad single issues aren’t longer, as the balance between the three plots is a bit off. This issue spends more time at Graymalkin, so if you’re expecting a lot more from Rogue’s encounter, patience is key with more to come there.

Uncanny X-Men #28 keeps the momentum going with a strong mix of reveals, action, and escalating danger. Gail Simone continues to juggle multiple threads with confidence, even if the balance is not perfect in a single issue format. The Graymalkin plot stands out the most, pushing the tension higher while tying back to earlier seeds in satisfying ways. The Outliers storyline leans fully into the strange, but it pays off with exciting action and intriguing developments. There are still questions left hanging, but enough is revealed to keep readers hooked and invested in what comes next.
