Dark Horse Comics has announced The Big Shakedown, a four-issue noir series by Jordan Blum, Tim Seeley, and Scott Koblish. Joining them in on the fun is colorist Hi-Fi with letters by Nate Piekos. The story centers on an earthquake-decimated Los Angeles. Issue #1 will be available in September 2026 and will feature cover art by Koblish.
So what’s The Big Shakedown about?
The Big One, the earthquake to end all earthquakes, has finally struck Los Angeles. The government decides not to rebuild and the city becomes a no-man’s-land for those who refuse to leave it. But hey, you can’t beat the weather.
Five years later, Ester Blanco, a down-on-her-luck former PI, is willing to do anything to escape the City of Angels. She believes she’s found her ticket out when a desperate father hires her to solve a missing persons case in a city where a third of the population is already missing. Instead, the trail of this lost girl leads Ester to uncover a dark web of cults, conspiracy, and corruption that threatens every Angeleno who stayed behind.
“I’ve now lived in Los Angeles for most of my adult life and The Big Shakedown is a pulpy love/hate letter to a town that can simultaneously be heaven and hell on Earth,” said Blum. “LA noir has a long, rich history and we wanted to do a unique and original spin on the detective thriller, so we set it in the aftermath of every Angeleno’s greatest fear… THE BIG ONE. Who better to explore a filthy, post-earthquake underworld than my co-writer Tim Seeley? And who better to build a city of broken freeways, sinkhole mansions and studio backlot red light districts than artist Scott Koblish? Throw in the beautiful sunsets above the flooded Venice Beach canals colored by Hi-Fi, and the smashed neon letters of Nate Piekos littering Hollywood Blvd and you have yourself a down and dirty, action-packed, pot boiler of a mystery that could only take place in the City of Angels.”
Koblish added, “I’ve been in Los Angeles for half of my life now, and I never tire of exploring its unique spaces, so it’s a joy to be able to put that to paper. Tim Seeley and Jordan Blum are terrific collaborators and are doing absolutely amazing things in the world of comics.
