Iron Circus Comics has announced a new Kickstarter campaign for The Goblin Throne, a dark fantasy horror-romance graphic novel from award-winning creator Mel Gillman. Alongside the announcement, AIPT can exclusively share an excerpt from the upcoming hardcover graphic novel.
Known for works such as As the Crow Flies, Stage Dreams, and Other Ever Afters, Gillman’s latest project leans fully into eerie folklore and adult horror, telling the story of a woman haunted by a broken pact with the Goblin Queen.
Described as a “beautiful, eerie tale,” The Goblin Throne follows a desperate young woman who strikes a bargain for peace and safety with the Goblin Queen, believing she is willing to pay any cost. But after fleeing from the true price of the deal, she soon learns there is no escaping the Goblin Kingdom forever.
Years later, her son unknowingly falls into the Goblin Queen’s trap, forcing him to confront both the horrors surrounding his family and a promise of his own.
“THE GOBLIN THRONE is my best, nastiest horror-romance comic yet,” said Mel Gillman. “It’s a squarely adult story about craven lesbian desire and heartbreak, told in the style of ancient fairy tales — specifically the old, weird, and violent ones.”
Gillman added, “I could not be more thrilled to be working on this book with Iron Circus Comics, which has never shied away from unleashing messy, complex, and challenging queer adult comics onto the world!”
Iron Circus publisher C. Spike Trotman emphasized the project’s focus on sapphic fantasy storytelling and grim fairy tale aesthetics.
“There are far too few Sapphic fairy tales out there,” said Trotman. “We’re sick of stories about some dude stalking yet another princess! We want a story about a hot, one-eyed Goblin Queen scouring the earth for the woman that stole her heart and broke a promise.”
Trotman continued, “Author Mel Gillman sucks you into a world of passion, blood, and betrayal, rendered in their peerless colored pencil illustrations. The campaign will fund a 140-page, full-color, 6” x 9” hardcover graphic novel aimed at adult readers. Kickstarter rewards will include early bird specials, exclusive bookplates, original pages, and discounted bundles of Iron Circus titles selected by Gillman.
