David Colton’s growing power takes center stage in new look at ‘Avengers: Armageddon’ #4 and ‘Cap’

As Red Hulk’s war expands across the globe, one unstable superhuman may become an even greater threat than the enemy the Avengers came to stop.

Marvel Comics has revealed new details and cover artwork for Avengers: Armageddon #4, the latest chapter in Chip Zdarsky, Delio Diaz, and Frank Alpizar’s five-issue event series that is laying the foundation for a new era of Avengers stories.

The event began this week with Avengers: Armageddon #1, throwing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes into a worldwide crisis after Red Hulk seized control of Latveria and began extending his influence beyond its borders. Facing political opposition from the United Nations, the Avengers must decide how far they are willing to go to stop a conflict that threatens global stability.

A major wildcard in the story is David Colton, the Captain America introduced during Zdarsky’s acclaimed run on Captain America. Recently empowered with abilities comparable to the Sentry, Colton’s growing power has become a source of concern for both allies and enemies alike.

Discussing the character’s role in the event, Zdarsky told Marvel.com:

“Anyone reading CAPTAIN AMERICA knows his origins are filled with tragedy and bloodshed, which has kept him off the table for years, away in the woods. So he’s had a lot of time to see the rise of superpowers and a new kind of super-combat, which he may have opinions on…”

The fallout from Avengers: Armageddon also connects directly to Zdarsky’s ongoing Captain America series with artist Valerio Schiti.

The current storyline finds Steve Rogers trapped in Hell following his defeat at the hands of Red Hulk. To return to Earth, Captain America must strike an uneasy bargain with Doctor Doom and challenge Mephisto’s control over the underworld.

That saga continues in September’s Captain America #15, where Steve faces a new battlefield.

Siege of the Red Skull

According to Marvel, Red Skull and an army of vengeful spirits launch a massive assault against the free souls of the underworld. Captain America must rally the dead and build a resistance force capable of challenging Mephisto’s growing power.

Marvel also shared praise for the opening chapter of Avengers: Armageddon, with critics highlighting the event’s scale, political tension, and long-term implications for the Marvel Universe.

Fans can now get their first look at covers for Avengers: Armageddon #4 by Dike Ruan and Jeehyung Lee, along with Valerio Schiti’s cover for Captain America #15. Both issues arrive in September as Zdarsky continues building toward his upcoming Avengers relaunch with artist Marco Checchetto later this year.
