‘That Texas Blood’ returns with new story arc ‘Hell Comes to Allison Ranch’ this September

Sheriff Joe Bob Coates returns to Ambrose County this fall as a powerful Texas family teeters on the brink of all-out war.

One of Image Comics’ most acclaimed crime series is returning this September with a brand-new chapter.

Writer Chris Condon (News from the Fallout) and artist Jacob Phillips (Everything Dead & Dying) are reuniting for That Texas Blood: Hell Comes to Allison Ranch, a six-issue story arc that brings readers back to Ambrose County for another tense and violent mystery.

The new storyline centers on Sheriff Joe Bob Coates and Deputy Wilson Hart as they investigate escalating tensions at the Allison Ranch, the largest and wealthiest ranch in the United States. What begins as a family dispute soon threatens to erupt into open conflict.

According to Condon, longtime readers will find connections to some of the series’ most beloved stories, while newcomers will have an easy entry point into the world of That Texas Blood.

“Well… we’re back! Joe Bob returns, this time for a story set in 2003 that we like to call ‘Hell Comes to Allison Ranch.’ It’s our most action-packed story arc yet with strong thematic links to two of our previous, fan-favorite outings—That Texas Blood volume one and The Enfield Gang Massacre,” said Condon in an exclusive scoop on the announcement at IGN. “While this new arc has some connections to our past stories, it’s also a great place for readers unfamiliar with Ambrose County or its inhabitants to jump on, and Jacob and I are excited to bring some new collaborators along with us, too. We are so excited to be adding letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou and designer Michael Tivey to the That Texas Blood ranks. With the team we have assembled on this book, and the story we have to tell, I think this may just be the best That Texas Blood story yet.”

The first issue will include bonus content such as behind-the-scenes material, interviews, essays, and cartoons. Readers can also look forward to variant covers by Martin Simmonds, Luana Vecchio, Mark Chiarello, and additional artists.

Phillips expressed his excitement about returning to the series after time away.

“Joe Bob’s back and it feels so good! Coming back to That Texas Blood feels like coming home to us and we’ve missed it after so long away. We return with a brand new story arc, ‘Hell Comes To Allison Ranch.’ A heist gone wrong on the biggest ranch in the US on the night of the invasion of Iraq. This story is the perfect jumping on point for new readers and a warm welcome back for the regulars. So slip on your favourite pair of jeans, grab a can of Doyers and settle in. It’s gonna be one hell of a ride.”

To celebrate the return, Image Comics will also release a facsimile edition of the original That Texas Blood #1. Printed on deluxe newsprint, the special edition offers readers a chance to revisit the issue that launched the series and introduced Sheriff Joe Bob Coates.

Since its debut, That Texas Blood has earned praise for its blend of crime fiction, small-town drama, and modern Western storytelling. The series is currently being developed as an FX television drama from Jim Mickle and E.L. Katz.

Readers looking for more stories set in the same world can also explore The Enfield Gang Massacre, the companion series that shifts the action 150 years into the past and explores the violent history of the region.
