Nearly a decade after The Adventure Zone began as a family Dungeons & Dragons podcast, the beloved Balance saga is preparing for its final chapter in graphic novel form. Ahead of its July 14 release, AIPT can exclusively reveal a preview of The Adventure Zone: Story and Song, the seventh and concluding installment of the #1 New York Times bestselling series.
Adapted from the hit podcast by Justin, Travis, Griffin, and Clint McElroy, with artwork by Carey Pietsch, Story and Song brings the acclaimed Balance storyline to its emotional conclusion. The original podcast continues to draw roughly 2.5 million downloads each month, while the graphic novels have introduced Taako, Magnus, and Merle’s adventures to an even broader audience.
The final volume sees the trio uncover the long-buried truth about themselves, their shared past, and the mysterious threat that has haunted them since joining the Bureau of Balance. Their long-awaited reunion with loved ones is cut short when the forces pursuing them finally catch up, setting the stage for one last battle that promises to reshape everything.

For Clint McElroy, finishing the series is equal parts celebration and farewell.
“It’s like that moment when da Vinci said ‘Okay, Mona, I think we’re done here.’ Or when David Chase wrote ‘I went ahead and ordered some for the table.’ There’s something special about wrapping up a project that you love. Excited about laying out a finale. But sad because you are going to miss the characters.”
Artist Carey Pietsch reflected on the unexpected journey of bringing the entire Balance campaign to comics.
“When I first got to join the McElroys in working on The Adventure Zone Graphic Novel series, I really didn’t know if we would ever get to adapt the entire Balance arc! It’s only because of readers’ support that we made it this far, and I am so, so grateful for the time you’ve spent with these books. I hope that when you finally get to read Story and Song, you feel that it does justice to the hopes you entrusted us with along the way. We each put all the work and care and heart into TAZGN7 that we possibly could. The rest is up to you!”
The finale marks the end of one of the most successful podcast-to-comics adaptations ever published. Along the way, The Adventure Zone has become a touchstone for tabletop gaming fans, earning comparisons alongside modern fantasy favorites like Critical Role, Dimension 20, and Dungeon Crawler Carl.
