A major retcon changes everything in X-Men Blue #19

Who says you can’t go home again?

Needless to say, there are SPOILERS ahead. You’ve been warned.

During his (now-ended) tenure at Marvel Comics, Brian Michael Bendis always wanted his books to be big. That’s why when he introduced a time-displaced group of the original five X-Men into the main Marvel continuity, he tried very hard to remind everyone they weren’t from another universe, they weren’t duplicates–these were OUR X-Men, the same ones we see the adult versions of now.

In “Battle of the Atom” #1, present Cyclops found out the hard way that Teen Cyke is in fact himself.

When Dennis Hopeless took over All New X-Men, he decided to throw that assertion out, instead insisting that these WEREN’T our X-Men, presumably to let them grow into different characters, and to preserve the drama that something bad could still happen to them.

The O5 are now guided by yet ANOTHER writer, Cullen Bunn, in X-Men Blue. And he’s gone and retconned the retcon, for some reason. Yes, these ARE our X-Men, and those other guys they saw in All-New #19? In another Bendis callback, in this week’s X-Men Blue #19, they’re revealed to be the disguised Brotherhood of the future, from everyone’s favorite (and I in NO WAY mean that facetiously) crossover event, Battle of the Atom.

What does this mean? With rumors of X-Men Blue ending this summer, does Bunn have an end game in mind? Or does he just feel like Bendis’ stories were done dirty on his way out the door, and they need to be cleaned up a bit?

X-Men Blue #19, written by Cullen Bunn and drawn by R.B. Silva, is on sale now.
