Far Cry 5 first impressions

Far Cry 5 continues the winning formula, with stealth action, shovel fighting, and intense antagonists.

I’d say 14 hours of playtime is enough to know whether you like a game and would recommend it, and in the case of Far Cry 5, I definitely recommend it. It’s fun and action packed with sections that feel like they’re from an action movie and a psychological thriller.

My play-through has primarily been co-op and it’s a blast causing mayhem with a friend. You can play most of the missions in stealth with a few that require you to go ‘loud’ with gunfire and explosions everywhere. There’s little more satisfying than taking out a whole outpost with a bow or even a shovel.

The weapon options here are impressive. Melee weapons include the standard baseball bats, knuckle dusters, shovels, and hoes which you can use to take down all who stand in your way. Guns include pistols, shotguns (sawn off and regular), submachine guns, rifles, sniper rifles, compound bows and even flamethrowers. The range of weapons available is great as you can mix and match different combinations. Want to go silenced with a loud backup? Then take a bow along with an un-suppressed assault rifle or choose a suppressed .50cal sniper rifle and a shotgun for when it all goes loud.

The characters within the game are well written and like with all Far Cry games, the antagonists are the ones that stick out. Joseph ‘The Father’ Seed is the leader of the cult and the main antagonist of the game. John Seed is a suave cult member who is entrenched with the power of “yes” and is the main driving force behind his belief. Jacob Seed is an ex-military man suffering from PTSD who feels that he was a weapon without a cause, until provided with one by the cult. The final member is Faith Seed, who controls her region with the mysterious Bliss drug that helps her maintain control. Each of the antagonists are unique, both in character development, and how they approach the player character and their ongoing war against the cult. Some will try to convert you through torture, others with brainwashing and others through drugs. This character work is very rich and makes the game feel complex and layered.

Closing up

Overall, I recommend Far Cry 5 very much. It’s a full game and it will take most people at least 15 to 20 hours to finish if they are just going for the story alone, which could expand dramatically with all the other options available.

Side activities, from hunting bears to fishing in a river, are enjoyable. The weapons handle great, the vehicles are all fun to use and the writing of the game is well done with characters all feeling distinct enough to stand out. Even on the medium graphics settings that my PC allows, it looks rich and the sweeping landscapes are fun to explore.
