DCU executive producer Geoff Johns: ‘Titans’ will focus on Dick Grayson’s transformation into Nightwing

Titans executive producer Geoff Johns reveals more details about which period of Dick Grayon’s life the DC Universe series examines.

Although the first nine episode titles (and of course, the now infamous “F–ck Batman!” line) gave us a good idea of what to expect in upcoming DC Universe television series Titans, exactly what point in Dick Grayson, the Titans leader’s life would be explored was still unclear. A recent sit-down with renowned comic book writer and Titans executive producer Geoff Johns revealed more.

“We talked a lot about starting Dick Grayson as Nightwing,” Johns said in an interview with the official DC Comics website. “We all got to a point where we’re going to miss and hop over what I think is a really interesting period of Dick Grayson’s life where he left Batman and he was struggling to find a new identity and who he was.”

Concerning the infamous “F-k Batman!” line, Johns said, “We knew that line would be polarizing in the episode. The attitude and the story behind it, it’s powerful. But out of context it’s a line that people are going to over dissect. So when I heard that they were going to use it in the trailer, I knew it would be polarizing because it’s out of context. Originally, we were excited for people to find it in the show because it’s part of a bigger scene, but we knew that it was going to be polarizing no matter when people saw it. And I can’t wait for people to see the rest of the show.”

Although the rift between Batman and Dick Grayson seems irreparable and damaging to the former Robin at first, much of the intrigue surrounding Nightwing’s character is his growth from Batman’s boy sidekick into a grown man.

“We took a sliver of the comics that dealt with Dick Grayson post-Batman a little bit and amplified that even more, exploring what that period for Dick Grayson was really like,” Johns added. “Nightwing is such a stable, confident, emotionally balanced character–he’s Dick Grayson when he’s found his place in the world. We wanted to build up to him becoming Nightwing.”

Episode 4 of Titans, “Doom Patrol,” is now available for streaming on DC Universe.
