Marvel and Williams Racing team up for ‘Iron Man: Racing Towards Doom’ #1 this October

Formula 1 meets the Marvel Universe as Iron Man joins Williams Racing drivers Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon to stop Doctor Doom in a high-speed adventure.

Marvel Comics is bringing Formula 1 action to the Marvel Universe this October with Iron Man: Racing Towards Doom #1, a one-shot created in partnership with Williams Racing. The issue is written by Ethan Sacks with art by Greg Land, placing Tony Stark alongside Atlassian Williams F1 Team drivers Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon for a race where the stakes extend far beyond the track. This is one of many new Doctor Doom projects announced this year, more than likely due to Avengers: Doomsday coming this December.

The story unfolds during the latest Formula 1 season in the Marvel Universe, where Doctor Doom has his sights set on ensuring Latveria crosses the finish line victorious. Iron Man joins forces with Sainz and Albon to confront Doom’s plans, with Black Widow, Captain America, and other Marvel heroes joining the action.

Marvel teases a showdown where cutting-edge racing technology collides with one of its greatest villains. As Doom’s scheme unfolds on and off the circuit, Iron Man and his allies will have to outmaneuver the ruler of Latveria before he claims victory.

Writer Ethan Sacks said the project was an opportunity to introduce two passionate fanbases to each other’s worlds.

“With Iron Man: Racing Towards Doom, we are in the unique (pole) position to introduce fans of Williams F1, a racing team with a storied history, to what’s so cool about the comic book medium. And we can show superhero fans what’s awesome about the fastest sport in the world. You can practically feel the draft from the racing sequences produced by Greg Land and the art team, with guidance from the experts at Williams in the passenger seat. Star racers Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon joining Iron Man and several of his Avengers pals against the nefarious Doctor Doom? Now, that’s a Marvel Team-Up for the ages.”

Editor Mark Paniccia hinted that Doom’s ambitions stretch beyond winning a race.

“Marvel fans know that when Doom sets his sights on something, the consequences ripple far beyond a single corner of the Marvel Universe. This story throws Iron Man into one of those moments, but what game is Doom really playing behind the checkered flag?”
