Hearthstone: Saviors of Uldum: Zephrys the Great, new Legendary minion revealed

The most unique card and Battlecry effect to ever come out of Hearthstone arrives in the form of Zephrys the Great.

The “card that was the most difficult they’ve ever had to design,” according to the Hearthstone design team has been prematurely revealed in today’s Saviors of Uldum final card reveal livestream (by a Faceless Lackey of all things): brand-new Legendary minion, Zephrys the Great.

  • Zephrys the Great
  • Class: Neutral
  • Card type: Minion
  • Rarity: Legendary
  • Mana cost: 2
  • Card text: Battlecry: If your deck has no duplicates, wish for the perfect card.

What is “the perfect card” exactly? No, it’s not Flamewreathed Faceless or Chillwind Yeti or even “Deal 100 damage.” Here’s what we know about Zephyr’s extremely unique Battlecry effect so far, according to senior game designer Peter Whalen (thanks to Redditor __Hello_my_name_is___ for compiling):

  • Zephrys choose from Basic and Classic cards from all classes when making his wish.
  • The card choices are compartmentalized into different categories (AOE, Tempo, Value, and so forth) and the effect chooses the most appropriate categories for the current game state; you then you get to choose a card from one of the categories.
  • It’s possible that the cards you get are all from the same category, depending on the game state.
  • The Wish tries to give you something you can play this turn (with the mana you still have).
  • If not possible, it gives you something you can play next turn.
  • You don’t really get any bad or uninteresting cards.
  • Peter Whalen said that you will be offered a Crazed Alchemist if there is a Doomsayer on your opponent’s board, so the effect can get very specific in the answers offered.
  • Other things you are offered: AoE if your opponent’s board is full. Single target removal if your opponent has a large minion.
  • (Pure speculation) Maybe if your opponent is low on health you’ll get some direct damage spells? And conversely, you get healing spells when you are close to dying?

Zephrys sounds like one of the most interesting and unique cards to come out of the game in a long time and we’re very interested to see how it fits in the meta (even if it doesn’t, you can bet we’ll be rubbing the lamp with the quickness to play this minion).
