C2E2 day two: Superheroes of DC panel – New details on Flash, Wonder Woman, and ‘Death Metal’

New details emerge about Scott Snyder’s Death Metal, Flash, Wonder Woman, and more.

Superheroes of DC

The Superheroes of DC Panel was filled with a star-studded lineup consisting of Daniel Warren Johnson, Joshua Williamson, Sean Murphy, James Tynion IV, Mike Perkins, Doug Mahnke, and Gail Simone. Around the first half of the panel was a touching tribute to Doug Mahnke’s 25 years of working at DC Comics. They went through his entire career from working on Justice League now to starting on Major Bummer, which writer John Arcudi wanted originally to be called “Captain Slack-Ass.” Then they went through his work on Action Comics, Green Lantern, Detective Comics, before presenting Mahnke with a cake for his time at DC as well as a silver special variant of a recent Mahnke Batman statue based on his art from Detective Comics.

We then continued down the line as each panelist explained what they were working on and why they were so excited about it.  Gail Simone loves writing the Flash Giants even though she never had a huge desire to write the character. The idea of bringing aboard new fans and using that rogues gallery won her over.  Perkins was stoked when he was able to gel with Greg Rucka and collaborate with him on Lois Lane after meeting him at a previous C2E2.  Daniel Warren Johnson said that Wonder Woman: Dead Earth was his only pitch for DC Black Label. He’d never really been interested in Wonder Woman before (weird right?), and wanted to pitch a Wonder Woman story he’d most want to buy. Joshua Williamson might have an unparalleled love for Barry Allen as he talked about the story arc coming after Flash #750 called “The Flash Age” which features the return of Jay Garrick. Also coming will be new and old villains, like Paradox and Reverse Flash. Sean Murphy didn’t think any of his Batman: White Knight comics would sell, but once they got successful, he said he has plenty of ideas. James Tynion IV said he has written over 200 Batman-related comics since starting at DC, and he’s still so excited to talk about his new villains such as the Designer and Punchline, the build-up to “Joker War”, and how, “The worst thing happened in [Bruce’s] life did so when he was 8 years old, and he’s designed himself to make sure that didn’t happen again. Then six months ago, that happened again with Alfred.”

Then Scott Snyder came on to the stage to talk Death Metal and the crowd erupted. This thing’s going to be wild folks. Scott Snyder is taking bigger to it’s biggest. I’m talking Wonder Woman melting the Invisible Jet, Swamp Thing wearing sunglasses, a Cthulhu Dark Knight, a Bruce Wayne A.I. Dark Knight, a sentient Gotham, a trapped Superman forced to power the sun. To sum it all up, it’s “the Anti-Crisis.”

That’s it for DC’s day 2 announcements. I hope you found something that makes you excited about what’s to come!
