Matt Hardy announces WWE departure, confirms free agent status

The latest Thoughts From the Throne was a big one.

After months of rumors and speculation Matt Hardy has revealed that he has let his contract with WWE expire and he’s now officially a free agent. Hardy shared the announcement early Monday morning on his YouTube show, Thoughts From The Throne.

Watch the announcement below.

“This is what happened as of this current time, I have decided to let my contract with WWE expire,” Hardy announced. “I am going to become a free agent and that’s not saying I’m not ever going to return to WWE. I did not want to leave WWE. I love WWE. WWE is my home. WWE has treated me great as an employee for the last three years. They’ve been good to me. They’ve been good to my family. They’ve been great to my kids. I have nothing but great things to say about the WWE and all the people who work there.”

Hardy also noted that the reason he’s decided to become a free agent is because he and WWE are on different pages creatively.

“It’s just time for me to take a break and become a free agent,” he continued. “I didn’t want to leave WWE because it is my home. The reason I needed to leave WWE is because when it comes to my creative stance and my outlook on myself and my career and how I wanted to go for these last three or four years that I have left to spend as an active in-ring competitor I just think myself and WWE are on different pages.”

Hardy goes on to say that while he’s leaving WWE, it will always be his home and he’s positive that he will return again one day, especially considering that there’s a Hall of Fame ring waiting for him and Jeff.

The Broken One will be keeping up with current events in the wrestling world while he enjoys a nice break from the action. He specifically mentioned that he intends to watch Being the Elite, Raw, AEW Dark, NWA Powerrr, Impact Wrestling, WWE Backstage (with his brother Jeff Hardy as a guest), NXT, AEW Dynamite, Friday Night SmackDown, Ring of Honor, MLW and NJPW.

Hardy ended the video by announcing that the #FreeTheDelete series finale begins Wednesday at noon. He teased that we could see a new dark entity or the second coming of Broken Matt Hardy.
