David Simon does alternative history, Top Chef favorites return and Netflix’s next fantasy adventure

This week, David Simon’s latest, The Plot Against America, premieres on HBO. For those who like cooking competitions, Top Chef comes back for its seventeenth season and Netflix goes to the fantasy well again for The Letter for the King.

Alternative History?

For close to twenty years, David Simon and HBO have had a close working relationship resulting in critically acclaimed programming. The man behind The Wire, Treme and The Deuce has a show premiering Monday night entitled, The Plot Against America. Much like his previous projects, Simon performs extensive research and draws upon real events to inspire and craft engaging stories.

The Plot Against America is based off of a novel with the same name. It is an alternative history tale taking place during the World War II era. During the 1940 presidential campaign, a xenophobic populist candidate gains a high profile and begins to turn the nation towards fascism. That person happens to be famous aviator, Charles Lindbergh.

A Second Round of All-Stars

Multi-Emmy award winning reality competition, Top Chef, is coming back for a seventeenth season. Though there have been plenty of previous contestants that came back and competed, this will only be its second official All-Stars edition.  Fifteen of the country’s most talented chefs return to battle for the titular title and the cash prize.

There will be plenty of quick-fire challenges, Restaurant Wars and some of the most eye catching and most likely delicious meals to fulfill those food porn needs. Top Chef: All Stars L.A. premieres Thursday night on Bravo.

More Fantasy from Netflix

With the success of The Witcher, Netflix is hoping its next high fantasy series from a European writer’s work will also be a hit. The Letter for the King has been likened to a more family friendly version of the show featuring Geralt of Rivia. It’s a coming of age story where a young knight embarks on an epic quest to save his kingdom. Along the way, he encounters prophecies, magical powers and fickle companions.

The source material is from a 60’s Dutch novel written by Tongke Dragt. The Letter for the King will consist of six episodes and will star Amir Wilson, Gijs Blom and Ruby Ashbourne Serkis. Ruby’s father, Andy Serkis, even makes an appearance. Look for all the episodes to be released this Friday on Netflix.
