Chances are if you were a Sega Genesis kid growing up, you played Streets of Rage. The game was a hit for its outstanding electronic dance music soundtrack, likeable cast of characters, and of course, the combat.

There’s a total of 17 playable characters this time around and 12 of them you’ll recognize from the previous 3 installments. The developers initially used sprites from previous versions of the game at the start development, since at the time they didn’t have any new characters yet. They ended up enjoying the look and feel of the classic versions of the characters so much, that they decided to include them in the game. But it wasn’t easy to get 12 retro characters and their gorgeous pixel-art moved over.

“First, our team had to rip each and every character, one by one, frame by frame,” Dotemu Executive Producer Cyrille Imbert. “This was an exhausting process because we were dealing with around 1,500 different frames. But the next phase was even more complicated because we had to reconstruct all the animations with the right timings from the original games. Because of how intricate this process was, everything had to be done by hand.”

In addition to classic characters, there’s also classic tunes! You can choose between two different soundtracks for Streets of Rage 4. One is brand spanking new, composed by Olivier Deriviere, Yuzo Koshiro, Motohiro Kawashima, Yoko Shimomura, Das Mörtal, and Scattle. Th other is a nostalgia laced collection composed of the development team’s favorite tracks from Streets of Rage 1 and 2. Players can switch soundtracks in-game whenever they want.
