WWE will address future of 2K franchise on Monday

Some ‘exciting news’ is on its way.

Yesterday, during WWE’s Q1 2020 investors call WWE Interim Chief Financial Officer Frank Riddick informed investors that this year’s installment of the WWE 2K video game franchise will not be released. This announcement effectively cancelled the latest iteration of the game, which is the first time this has occurred since 2K Games began releasing them annually in 2000.

There’s not going to be a launch of the game this year,” said Riddick in response to a question about WWE 2K21.

The news quickly made waves among fans and social media was buzzing over the game’s cancellation. Some fans were understandable disappointed, while others were pleased with the news in hopes that it would give WWE and 2K time to start with a clean slate to ensure they avoid another disastrous launch. WWE 2K20’s launch in October of last year was met with widespread outrage over poor graphics and numerous game-breaking bugs.

Apparently, WWE and 2K were quick to react to the social media and mainstream attention WWE 2K21’s cancellation received. The WWE Games Twitter sent out the following Tweet yesterday evening:

“We will be sharing details on the future of the WWE 2K franchise as well as some exciting news on Monday at 7:00 a.m. PT.

What’s the exciting news? The top theory at this time is that a new wrestling game is being announced for later this year. Justin Leeper, former writer for the WWE 2K franchise, recently claimed in a YouTube video that 2K will be releasing a different kind of WWE video game this year. Looks like we won’t have to wait long to see if his prediction is correct.

Are you excited for another 2K release or do you want to see WWE take their next game in a new direction? Let me know down in the comments or hit me up on Twitter, @heyitsjjtravers.
