‘Justice League Dark’ #24 review

The war may be slowed for the Justice League Dark, but if this week’s issue is any indication, it is far from done. Ram V and Amancay Nahuelpan reveal much about each character’s current journey via discourse between Bobo and Wonder Woman. Can this check-in issue delight, or does it fizzle?

For the most part, it delights! There are cool reveals and interesting struggles each character is enduring and it’s all pulled together via Bobo and Wonder Woman discussing the state of the team. There’s unrest in most of the characters — even Man-Bat is restlessly doing research as a coping mechanism — which helps keep the narrative contained and singular in its approach. That’s important since the plot jumps around, showing us what each character is up to.

Possibly the most tantalizing is Swamp Thing, who gets a gloriously well-rendered full-page splash by Nahuelpan that unveils some tantalizing ideas that could work for a solo series, let alone one with Justice League Dark. Dr. Fate also has an intriguing scene, further cementing interest for the reader to carry on with that story. Zatana bookends the book well since she’s likely the most desperate of the bunch and Wonder Woman’s obvious nervous calm is a helpful brooding element in the narrative as a whole.

Getting back to the art, Nahuelpan does a good job with June Chung on colors. There aren’t a lot of opportunities for pages that might blow you away — there is a lot of talking and exposition here — but Nahuelpan does wow with a great full-page splash of a man burning, a detective-style board of twine and pictures, and the Swamp Thing page I mentioned above is a showstopper too.

If you ask me, that’s the best kind of superhero team storytelling.

Justice League Dark #24 is a good issue setting up many moving parts as each character has an important story to tell. Ram V even gives Bobo an important task by the end of the issue, and one could surmise we're in for a story that reveals these characters are stronger together. If you ask me, that's the best kind of superhero team storytelling.
