Putting together a movie with an ensemble cast is a daunting task. It can be very easy to drown out some of the characters. Director and writer Kevin Tran dives in anyway in his movie The Dark End of the Street. The story takes place in one night and spans many different characters. The residents of a neighborhood soon realize someone is killing their pets.
The Dark End of the Street is an interesting movie. It seems to set itself up as a horror film. Someone finds their cat dead in a pool of blood. A few scenes later, a man with bloody boots is seen cleaning them. It is a curious premise that draws in audiences. Instead, it focuses on its many characters. The movie seamlessly weaves between its cast. There is never a sense of one story being more important than another. Tran is treating the audience to a slice of suburban life.
The Dark End of the Street is filled with dark humor. Tran makes sure to never belittle the importance of the individual stories or the overarching mystery. The jokes never seem out of place and add to the movie. Jokes aside, the heart of the movie never stops being about people. There is not much in the way of traditional action, but it would be wrong to say The Dark End of the Street is slow. It is an intimate movie about the insecurities and lives of regular people.
