X-Factor #2 marks the return of the Mojoverse. It’s been a hot minute since we have seen Mojo and his loony toon town take on the X-Men, last appearing in Mr. & Mrs. X. It’s not a turn anyone would have seen coming for the second issue of X-Factor, but here we are.
Mojo isn’t the only character returning to this title, either – Northstar’s sister, Aurora, has been revived from the dead. We don’t find out how she was killed in the opening issue of X-Factor, nor why she had been meeting a stranger in a motel that ultimately led to her death. The story glazes over that plot point, at least for right now, and instead focuses on a mysterious package left on the X-Factor’s doorstep containing bloodied ballet slippers. This ultimately leads the X-Factor to the Mojoverse.
The Mojoverse is still the same as it always has been: a world revolving around reality television. A nice update to this universe that Leah Williams has included is that everyone is now competing for stream time, and that popularity is based on how many views the show is receiving. In other words, the Mojoverse has become YouTube. It’s a nice touch.
I also wanted to make mention of how fantastic Mojo looks as drawn by David Baldeon. Baldeon does an amazing job portraying the stark contrast of the wacky creepiness Mojo has set against the serious and snarky exterior of the X-Men universe. David is paired well with Israel Silva, who really brings life into these characters with color.
In terms of the story, not much happens in this issue. I am finding that this series is carrying itself on the snark and dialogue alone, but that’s okay because I could read a full day’s worth of banter between X-Factor members, especially when Daken is involved. If you are looking for some classic X-Men snark, you have come to the right place.
