Get ready for some laughs, thrills, and even more laughs with this week’s Channel Surfing TV picks. Archer is getting back into the spy game when the eleventh season begins. Christopher Plummer and Archie Panjabi try to find a missing airplane in Departure. Then relive your most awkward middle school moments by watching outcasts, Maya and Anna, in PEN15.

The Comedic Exploits of Super Spies

Fans may have had to wait an extra four months but new episodes of Archer are arriving this week. The past three seasons have taken an anthology approach with each occurring in a different setting and genre while the titular character lies in a coma. However, for season 11, the show will be returning to its original spy agency premise and have Sterling Archer finally awaken.

The first two episodes are set to air this Wednesday, September 16, on FXX. It should be interesting if the series can recapture its original vibe after experimenting these most recent seasons.

Another NBC Missing Plane Conspiracy

NBC has premiered several shows about mysterious airplane disappearances in the past. There was the short lived, The Event, in 2010 and more recently, Manifest, which will have its third season some time next year. Now arriving on their streaming service is the British-Canadian suspense drama, Departure.

This conspiracy series explores the mystery of a passenger plane that disappears over the Atlantic Ocean without a trace except for a single survivor. Departure will make its debut on Peacock this Thursday, September 17.

The Horrors of Seventh Grade

PEN15 had the interesting concept of being a teenage comedy with the two leads played by grown adults while they interacted with real 13-year-olds. The premise seemed to work as the show received rave reviews along with some awards recognition including an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.

PEN15 provides an all too real look back at the awkward teenage years of junior high school through the eyes of its two protagonists; a pair of social outcasts. It also draws upon the nostalgia of the early aughts. In the upcoming second season, the tone will become darker and more nightmarish but also more hilarious. All episodes of season two will be released on Hulu this Friday, September 18.
