Channel Surfing: Awesome TV picks for the week of 10/05/2020

October is a great time for horror TV.

The Channel Surfing TV picks of the week gets into the Halloween spirit and features some exciting horror shows with swamp monsters, haunted houses, and zombies. Swamp Thing leaves the Louisiana bayous and into your home. A Henry James novella receives a retelling in The Haunting of Bly Manor. Then the new season of Fear the Walking Dead begins.

The Mysteries of the Green

The pandemic caused many productions to shut down thus delaying many shows for the fall season. In order to fill up the holes in their schedules, some networks looked to programming on streaming services to re-air. Much like Stargirl before, Swamp Thing is making the jump from DC Universe to the CW.

In time for the month of Halloween, the superhero horror series follows the titular character as he battles supernatural forces in the Louisiana Swamps. He is joined by a CDC doctor, Abby Arcane, who is investigating a mysterious virus. Though Swamp Thing was originally cancelled shortly after it premiered, maybe a bigger viewer response on broadcast television can breathe new life into the series.

Swamp Thing premiers Tuesday night, October 6, on the CW.

The Hillhouse Follow-Up

The Haunting of Hillhouse was well received when it premiered two years ago. The follow up to the critically acclaimed web series will be available to stream Friday, October 9, on Netflix. The same creative team and many of the original cast return for another ghostly tale.

The Haunting of Bly Manor covers a different story with all new characters. It is loosely based on the 1898 horror novella, The Turn of the Screw by Henry James about a young governess hired by a man to look over his niece and nephew and their family estate. While staying at the home, she begins seeing specters occupying the grounds.

Left for Dead

A week after the flagship’s season ten “finale” and the premiere of World Beyond, Fear the Walking Dead returns for its sixth season. The group wasn’t in a good place when we last left them. Morgan was shot through the chest while a small herd approaches him and the rest of his people were shipped to different parts of Pioneer country.

A lot happens this season including a possible Dwight/Sherry reunion and several time jumps in the story. Does Morgan survive his precarious situation? Find out when Fear the Walking Dead comes back Sunday, October 11, on AMC.
