‘Kickass vs. Hit-Girl’ #1 review

Patience Lee is on a collision course with Hit-Girl and she doesn’t even know it.

It seemed like it was only a matter of time before Patience Lee (The new Kickass) and Mindy McCready (Hit-Girl) crossed paths. What we didn’t know is that their introductions to one another other would become violent. No matter the case, Kickass vs. Hit-Girl #1 is the start of a collision course of two of the most badass female heroines in comics today.  Writer Steve Niles and artist Marcelo Frusin do their best to craft first issue that delivers action, entertainment, and of course story.

Ever since the 2018 debut of both new Kickass and Hit-Girl series, comic fans were most likely thinking if we would ever see the two together. Without further ado, Image Comics, Niles, and Frustin kindly obliged. The first issue offers up all the decapitations and brutal, hard-hitting action you’ve come to expect from the series. Most of the story follows Patience and her inner struggle to deal with killing her brother-in-law and the emotional ripple effect and toll it has on her sister. Meanwhile, Hit-Girl’s mission to serve justice around the world takes her from Columbia, Canada, Rome, and India to Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Niles has always been great at capturing the true essence of a character and bearing their flaws out to readers. His other series like Criminal Macabre and 30 Days of Night are great examples of this. In Kickass vs. Hit-Girl #1, he does a terrific job of setting up the story in a way that both newcomers and veterans of the series can understand. The only minor setback for readers unfamiliar with Patience Lee is there is no backstory here.

The illustrations graciously provided by Frusin fit right into the Kickass universe, giving the book a nice crime noir look. Aside from that, his artwork also sets the tone, allowing us to see both Kickass and Hit-Girl shine while taking down scumbag enemies. This allows the reader to know very early on that both protagonists are pretty equally matched. It’ll be interesting to watch the clever way the story brings them together.

Kickass vs. Hit-Girl #1 is a decent setup issue that sparks enough interest to see where it’s headed. The writing, imagery, and action are pretty solid. There are a few different variant covers you’ll want to get your hands on including one from Kickass creator John Romita Jr. Be sure to add a copy during your next comic shop trip.
