Blizzard Entertainment’s yearly convention, BlizzCon, is officially under way (though in a much different form than in years past), and Diablo fans were treated to an announcement we’ve been waiting to hear for years: a remaster of Diablo II is official, and it’s coming later this year.
Diablo II Resurrected will include both the original 2000 Diablo II base game, and its Lord of Destruction expansion pack that was originally released in 2001. The game has received a complete graphical overhaul, looking more like Diablo III and fitting in with modern games. However, players will also have the option to change the graphics back to how they looked 21 years ago.
In addition to being released on PC (and only PC, it seems; Blizzard’s recent forsaking of Mac players continues), Diablo II will also be released on Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, marking the first time Diablo II has been playable on console.
While the Diablo franchise began in 1997, Diablo II took it to new heights, and was a groundbreaking game that helped define what we think of when it comes to action RPGs. The game spawned multiple sequels, including Diablo III and the upcoming Diablo IV, and is so beloved that it still maintains an active community of players to this day.
Diablo II Resurrected will be released some time in 2021. Players can sign up at diablo2.com for a chance to be included in the game’s beta testing.
