Superdeep is an off shoot of haunted house horror. In 1984, seven miles below the surface, what sounded like the screams of men and women were recorded at the Kola Superdeep borehole. The area was sealed in order to keep others from finding it. Decades later, a team goes to investigate and must face a terrible threat that endangers all of humanity.
The research horror sub genre can be an exciting one. Classics like The Thing put on full display what these types of films have to offer. It is important in these stories to provide action, scares, and paranoia. This is what drives the plot and need to be working in varying degrees. If any of these elements are lacking, the entire thing tends to suffer.
All of this ties into pacing. Superdeep starts with a flashback. This is repeated many times throughout the film. The point seems to be to add depth to one of the characters, but it can slow things down at times. This is an ongoing issue with the film. Though Milena Radulovic does a fine job, the characters never really stand out.
The narrative can also be difficult to get into. The film wears too many influences on its sleeve. It may seem like a neat thing to combine some of the most popular video games of all time, but the end result is a muddled mess. It makes it difficult to get into the movie and can be even harder to figure out exactly what is going on.
Despite its many flaws, Superdeep is still a fun popcorn watch. The film contains some of the most powerful horror scenes in years. The body horror is next level and boasts some of the most disgusting moments of the year. The story and tension may be noticeably lacking, but the science fiction horror gross outs come out in full force.
It is also a fantastic non video game adaptation video game movie. This is a story that is almost level like in its design. The cast of Superdeep basically have to craft newer and more powerful weapons as they face bigger monsters. There is a familiarity that goes beyond movies. Things are uneven, but the film knows how to have fun.
