On Friday, Borys Kit of the Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed that James Ashcroft will be directing Legendary Pictures’ adaption of Max Brooks’ Bigfoot horror novel, Devolution. Kit’s report also states that Ashcroft will be working with screenwriter Eli Kent to polish the film’s script.
Ashcroft recently won acclaim at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival for his horror movie Coming Home in the Dark. He’s also had a long career as a character actor, especially in genre films.

As far as the source material is concerned, I know the idea of Bigfoot being scary seems ridiculous these–especially when you consider how many documentaries, and television series there are where they keeping searching the big guy and never find him. Combine that with Jack Link’s Messin’ with Sasquatch ad campaign, and it feels strange to consider the cryptid as even a fictional source of fear.
But trust me when I say that Max Brooks’ novel gets it right.
Devolution revolves around a group of people living in an eco friendly community that gets cut off from civilization after a natural disaster. The story of how their society devolves as it comes under attack from previously unseen predators (i.e. sasquatches) is told via journal entries from one of the residents and interviews with various experts/authorities.
I was skeptical at first, but Devolution manages to reinvent Bigfoot a terrifying creature. If Legendary does this right (and the doesn’t screw things up like Paramount did with World War Z), then James Ashcroft’s adaptation could make for an exceptional horror film.
