Substack reveals Panels app integration coming soon for comics readers

A new comics reader option will be available for Substack comics fans in the coming weeks.

Substack has revealed they have a plan for comic book readers using an app and it involves Panels. Turns out, reading comics in an email may not be the best choice so Panels allows them to not only improve the reading experience but also lock it down. Panels is a free comics reader app that uses CBR, CBZ, and PDF formats.

According to Substack, Panels will allow readers to link their accounts to the Panels app so that new comics content appears there automatically. The Panels app allows users to save progress, download comics, and even have panel view options on top of vertical scrolling. Expect the integration sometime in the coming weeks.

Given the number of creators who have made splashy announcements they’ll be moving their creator-owned work to Substack (including Jonathan Hickman, Chip Zdarsky, James Tynion IV, and Jeff Lemire) it’s good to see some thought going into the comic reading experience. Tynion even admitted back on August 9th creators were still figuring things out as to the best way to deliver a good comics reading experience for subscribers.

Another benefit of Substack’s Panels integration is that creators can simply drag and drop their comics files into Substack editor and have them appear in the Panels app for readers.
