John Layman and Dan Boultwood deliver a hilarious, crafty, and drunken adventure with Chu #8. In this issue, Saffron learns that the path to tens of millions of dollars lies within the origins of the 200-year-old wine she stole. She’ll have to drink her way to the truth. Only one question remains: can she stay drunk enough to figure out the secret? What ensues is a funny journey that involves a cabbage robbery, a clever infiltration, and a shocking reveal that you have to see to believe.
Chu #8 proves to be another worthy entry into the series. You never know what to expect in an issue of Chu, and that’s what makes each issue exciting to read. Chu #8 takes Saffron back to a Victorian-type era during her quest to find the origins of the 200-year-old wine that could make her wealthy behind her dreams. What you’ll also love about this issue is seeing Saffron continue to use the abilities she acquired while in prison, including learning French. These kinds of cool moments show off the sharp detail of storytelling that keeps Layman’s writing fresh and engaging.
Boultwood matches that swagger with his spot-on interpretations of the Victorian era with his awesome costume designs and matching wigs that make you think you’re in a Mozart movie. Boultwood’s illustrations capture the backgrounds, housing, townsfolk, and everything in between brilliantly. His transitions from one-panel moment to the next to keep the pacing tight and on course. Some of my favorite panel moments are during the encounter when Saffron sneaks her way into the mayor’s quarters. The dialogue and art make for some insanely funny moments.
Overall, Chu #8 moves the story forward with a big reveal you won’t see coming. This issue was a lot of fun to read and with a shocking moment during the book’s close.
