Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of September 29, 2021

Great comics come out every week. Here are the five best comics of the week this time around.

It’s Friday, and you know what that means: another edition of Fantastic Five, where we catalog the five best comics of the week into a handy-dandy list for your viewing pleasure. This week saw a nice mix of publishers all vying for position in the top five, so let’s get right to it!

The Department of Truth #13

The Department of Truth #13 continues to prove this series is a modern masterpiece. The fact that its creators turn the entire main narrative upside down is amazing further cementing the fact that this is filled with surprises, truths, and the embodiment of the unnerving nature of the power of ideas.

S.W.O.R.D. #8

S.W.O.R.D. #8 is a love letter to Storm’s legacy and outlines an exciting future for one of Marvel’s most iconic characters. It’s hard to read this issue and not get excited for what comes next.

Transformers: Shattered Glass #2

I think I ended up liking this issue even more than the first. While first outing was definitely solid, this one gave me a lot more to chew on. The artwork remains good, and even improved in some areas since the last issue. As I said previously, I’m impressed with how the characters still feel like themselves, even with moral alignment turned on its axis. I forgot how much I enjoyed reading a heroic take on Megatron since the ending of the fan favorite “Lost Light” series from the old canon, so having that revisited in detail was awesome. Now that things are starting to gear up, I’m even more excited to see what’s in store!

Superman: Son of Kal-El #3

DC Comics’ Superman: Son of Kal-El is plain good comics. It blends the utter truths of what makes Superman great with good art, multiple scenes that connect well with the character, and visual storytelling that’s pleasing. There’s a lot to enjoy here, making for a highly satisfying read.

Winter Guard #2

Winter Guard #2 is a fun spy story that’s really about the eclectic and strange Russian superhero team. Cady and Bazaldua are doing such a great job fleshing out these characters you’ll put this book down and only want more. Knowing this is a shorter four-issue series is a bit of a bummer when all you want is more Winter Guard in your life!
