If you’re a fan of shows like Ozark or Breaking Bad, then without a shadow of a doubt, Chicken Devil #1 is a must-read. The story centers around Mitchell Moss, a family man with two very spoiled children, a wife, and a chain of chicken restaurants called Mitch’s Hot Chicken that he co-owns with his business partner Antonio. That is until Antonio gets Mitchell and himself in trouble with a Russian mob by stealing two million dollars. Now, Mitchell and Antonio must pay the money back, or the mob will come for Mitchell’s family. It’s an insanely brilliant story crafted by writer Brian Buccellato and artist Hayden Sherman about chicken, revenge, and how an ordinary guy may possibly become a hero.
Chicken Devil #1 is a comic book that starts off by using familiar tropes like the double-crossing friend or owing a bunch of bad people money and then dumping that entire story idea on its head and entirely runs in the opposite direction in terms of storytelling. What sets it apart from other stories is that Mitchell Moss is not special. He doesn’t have an ex-military background. He’s not a retired secret agent. He’s just a regular guy who knows how to cook good chicken.
It’s that beat that makes the book so much better as you continue to follow him throughout the rest of the first issue. So when the big twist comes, you feel for the guy. When it comes to Mitchell and the chicken suit, it’s some of the best comedic panel timing I’ve seen in a comic book. In the first scene, we see Mitchell in the chicken head part of the costume. He reminded me of a serious version of Blankman, a character that comedian Damon Wayans played in the movie of the same name.
As for the artwork, Hayden Sherman brings to life a dark, gritty world with sensational moments of humor and intensity. His transitions from page to page are spectacular, and splash pages really highlight some killer memorable moments. I can’t wait to see Sherman unpack more delightful trails of action, suspense, and gunplay for Mitchell and any other character that may show up along the way.
Chicken Devil #1 is a terrific first issue and lays some solid character development on Mitchell Moss in the most gruesome ways. It’s funny, got a lot of heart and loads of potential. So get yourself to your local comic shop today and get yourself a copy.
