On Monday, Justin Kroll of Deadline exclusively revealed that Brendan Fraser has been cast as the main villain in HBO Max’s upcoming Batgirl film. A little while later, Aaron Couch of the Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the villain Fraser will be portraying is Firefly.
If you’re a child of the ’90s, then you’re no doubt excited to see Fraser making a well-deserved comeback via the genre films and television (like his role as Robotman in Doom Patrol) we enjoy around here. Despite being a box office superstar back in the day, he’s still a criminally underrated talent. Adding him to a cast that already includes Leslie Grace as Batgirl and J.K. Simmons (returning as Jim Gordon) has me far more excited for this film than I ever expected.

As for Firefly, he’s a pyromaniac who wears a cool looking insulated suit, both for protection from his own fire-based attacks and to hide the disfigurement he suffered at a chemical factory.
As with any comic-to-film adaptation, things may go in a different direction, but I doubt they’ll go with the villain’s previous light-based attacks — especially when there’s the chance to have Brendan Fraser wielding all types of crazy fire weapons.
HBO Max’s Batgirl is slated for release in 2022.
