On Star Trek: Prodigy, the protagonists have been learning the ropes to become members of Starfleet. Their journey has included highs with them coming together as a team and lows of a failed mission. All of this has prepared them to confront their pursuer in the first of the two-part midseason finale.
A run in with a Drednok on board the Protostar reminds the crew they can’t evade the Diviner no matter the distance between them. When he contacts them with a proposition to surrender the ship in exchange for the release of the laborers on Tars Lamora, the gang are faced with a tough decision. They don’t trust their previous master and risk being recaptured but they also want to free their former comrades.
The situation exhibits how far all the young characters have grown this season. Though they still have much to learn, they are beginning to take responsibility and do good regardless of the risks. So many lives are on the line so the stakes couldn’t be bigger for them. Now, they earn the recognition to be actual Starfleet cadets. No better way to symbolize their rite of passage than by actually wearing the uniform. It’s an inspiring scene with the threads fitting them nicely and a new shine on their badges. Even Jankom Pog looks proper.
There are some unexpected hitches in the exchange and the crew’s instincts about Star Trek: Prodigy’s big bad turn out to be true. Gwyn sacrifices herself and agrees to accompany her father in order to guarantee her friends’ safety. The Diviner’s actions are interesting to see because of his sentimental bond to his daughter.
Their relationship is far from traditional but he did choose the Protostar over her at one point. Despite Drednok’s constant nagging that his attachment is weakness, there is a soft spot in his heart for his progeny. The only frustrating part is one of the conditions for Gwyn to join him were answers to why he wants the ship and alas, we’ll have to wait longer for his explanation.
Other than losing their crewmate, everything else goes according to Dal and company’s plan. They foresaw the double cross and made good use of Murf’s indestructability. Finally, something useful for the blob to do other than comic relief. It’s as if the character’s introduction and powers from the start were for this moment. The stage is set and all that’s left heading into the halfway point of the first season is a daring rescue.
“A Moral Star Part One” highlights the growth and journey of the young crew so far with a confrontation with their former master and sets the stage for an exciting midseason finale.
