On Friday, Lesley Goldberg of The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Netflix has decided not to renew Space Force for a third season. While most viewers and critics found the Steve Carrell-led comedy enjoyable (we liked both Season 1 and Season 2 well enough), the series never gained the audience or acclaim to justify its massive budget.
According to Goldberg’s report, Carrell’s salary alone was over $1 million per episode. That included co-creator and executive producer credits, but the cast also featured big stars like John Malkovich and Lisa Kudrow. Add in all the sets that had to be built, and there’s no way Space Force could be made on the cheap.

Barring a revival down the road, Space Force ends with a number of unanswered questions. Earth’s plan/response to the giant asteroid heading its way might seem like the biggest, but I think most fans of the series will agree that it’s not knowing what Maggie did to end up in jail.
If this truly is the final goodbye for Captain Naird and his team, then at least we’ll always have that time Netflix’s Space Force managed to trademark its name ahead of the actual military branch.
