‘Gatlopp’ review: A game changing night

Go to Hell!

Gatlopp wears its influences on its sleeve. The movie is about a group of friends who meet up after a decade apart. As the night continues, they decide to play a drinking game. As it turns out, the game has supernatural stakes that may force the group to play for eternity if they cannot come together to win.

The friends are an entertaining group that are fun to watch. There is great chemistry between the four and many parts of Gatlopp will be reminiscent of a night hanging out. In a great touch, no one takes precedent over the rest. This is a story about four friends who have experienced their own versions of Hell, not one person who is relying on their three other buddies for help.

It is a standard premise that Gatlopp effectively infuses with heart. There is a tonal shift as things get less silly and more inward facing. Each person has some serious self-reflection in order to move forward with their lives. Instead of just throwing this change at audiences, it comes gradually. This allows time to get to know the characters and what they have gone through.

Everything follows a predictable pattern, but that does not prevent things from being enjoyable. The film is lighthearted look at friendship and moving on. On the surface, it sounds simple, but Gatlopp provides the escapism so many of today’s movies are missing.

Gatlopp comes to on Demand and digital June 16
