Legendary voice actor Kevin Conroy has passed away at the age of 66. Conroy’s death was confirmed by Diane Pershing, the voice of DC’s Poison Ivy. Conroy’s reps also confirmed his passing via TVLine.
“Very sad news: our beloved voice of Batman, Kevin Conroy, died yesterday,” Pershing shared on Facebook today. “He’s been ill for a while, but he really put in a lot of time at the cons, to the joy of all of his fans. He will be sorely missed not just by the cast of the series but by his legion of fans all over the world.”
Conroy voiced Batman for decades across various media, including the iconic Batman: The Animated Series and Justice League. He also voiced Batman in the incredible video game Batman: Arkham City and other Batman-related games by Rocksteady Studios. Conroy also portrayed a live-action Bruce Wayne in the Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover.
Conroy also shared his life experience in this year’s DC Pride 2022 in a story called “Finding Batman.” The autobiographical story, with art by J. Bone and letters by Aditya Bidikar, saw Conroy sharing his experience growing up in the 1950s and ’60s and having to hide the fact that he was gay, be it in auditions and in professional settings.
In that story, we learned that Conroy faced innumerous tragedy, dealing with the loss of friends to AIDS, a father who committed self-harm, and ample bigotry even when he kept his sexual identity a secret. Conroy lived through trauma, and much like Batman, used that as a springboard to create gorgeous and compelling art.
