‘Silk’ series coming to Amazon Prime Video

The series will be the first of potentially many others from Sony and Amazon Studios.

On Thursday, Joe Otterson of Variety reported that Amazon has ordered multiple series based on Sony’s Spider-Verse properties. The first of these will feature Cindy Moon, aka Silk, who was bitten by the same radioactive spider that gave Peter Parker his powers. The name of her series will be Silk: Spider Society.

The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang has been tapped to serve in the same capacity for this show. Considering that she made that series watchable again, it’ll be interesting to see what the talented writer/producer can do with a fresh slate involving a cool (and underrated) character. She’ll be joined on the executive side of things by Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

According to Otterson’s report, Silk: Spider Society will initially debut domestically on MGM+ before going global on Prime Video. If any part of that last sentence felt confusing, you’re not alone. According to Deadline, the convoluted rights to Sony’s Marvel properties means that the series will first have to debut on MGM+…which was previously Epix…which most of us never bothered with. The streaming service will switch to being called MGM+ in 2023, which has better name recognition, at least.

Whatever happens with this series, it’s good to see that Silk’s live-action debut is set up with solid writing/producing talent. Here’s what Angela Kang had to say about the news:

“I’m beyond thrilled to be joining the Amazon Studios family for this next chapter of my career. I look forward to working with the executive team on diverse, character-forward, watercooler shows for a global audience and am so excited to dive into my first challenge—bringing Korean-American superhero Silk to life on screen.”
