‘Mythic Quest’ season 3 episode 8 review: Childish office strife leads to bigger drama

The truth comes out between Poppy and Ian on this week’s Mythic Quest.

Last week’s Mythic Quest revisited the childhoods of both Poppy and Ian and how video games eventually brought them together. Back in the present, their relationship hits another rough patch, but is there any coming back this time around?

Spending so much time together at their company, they are bound to get on each other’s nerves eventually. What we receive are a series of amusing puerile antics that still shed light on who they are as characters. Ian’s demands reinforces his diva tendencies and reliance on new age holistic methods. Meanwhile, Poppy displays her own odd idiosyncrasies. It is humorous, and extremely petty, when she pulls the metric system card.

What’s interesting about this season of Mythic Quest is that the GrimPop office is becoming its own character. Despite its straightforward appearance, there is a lot of personality and hidden surprises. The workspace is used for great gags and here, the effects for Ian’s “efficiency pod” makes something mundane seem so futuristic.

The episode takes a more serious turn when the underlying causes of the bickering boil over. There was always the question how the two would get along with a new power dynamic, and at least for now, it’s not well. Though it has appeared all in good fun so far this season, the events take on another meaning when examining Ian’s unavailability in the office.

Testing out the latest VR equipment. All his time goofing off with Dana. His preoccupation with the Mythic Quest movie. They are all distractions because Ian is uncomfortable the more his partner becomes involved in the creative side of video game development, which is definitely a blow to his ego. He’s not invested because it’s not his vision. Charlotte Nicdao and Rob McElhenny stir up so much emotion and make the audience feel the hurt, disappointment, and regret when the truth finally comes out. It’s a significant drama to overcome as we approach the end of the season.

The other subplot includes some classic Mythic Quest humor. A minor incident causes David to overreact and uproot the office. Then we have Jo and Brad teaming up and eventually they find a way to antagonize and torment David. Though it’s entertaining in the moment, it doesn’t make a lasting impression and is easily forgettable.

“To Catch a Mouse” provides another funny but emotional chapter in the rollercoaster relationship between Ian and Poppy.

New episodes of Mythic Quest drop Fridays on Apple TV+.
