Plugging Leaks
On June 17, 1972, perpetrators broke into the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate Office Building. Later we would learn that the Richard Nixon administration was involved in the incident and the president would later resign due to attempts to cover up his and his staff’s connection.
The upcoming White House Plumbers follows E. Howard Hunt and G. Gordon Liddy, who were in charge of plugging press leaks by any means they saw fit. However in their attempts to shield President Nixon, they actually led to his downfall. Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux play Hunt and Liddy respectively.
The series premiere of White House Plumbers is today, Monday, on HBO.
A More Worldly Influence
Star Wars went outside the box with their animated anthology series Star Wars: Visions. Some of Japan’s most well-known animation studios developed anime shorts that were set within or inspired by the franchise’s universe. Though the stories were not technically canon to provide the creators more creative freedom, they were still engaging and breathed new life into the universe with their interesting takes.
Volume 2 is set to arrive on, appropriately enough, May the Fourth. This time around, it will be a more global effort with studios not just from Japan, but from all over the world such as El Guiri (Spain), Cartoon Saloon (Ireland), Punkrobot (Chile), Aardman (United Kingdom), Studio Mir (South Korea), Studio La Cachette (France), 88 Pictures (India), D’art Shtajio (Japan) along with Lucasfilm (United States), and Triggerfish (South Africa).
Star Wars: Visions volume 2 will be available to stream beginning Thursday, May 4, on Disney+.
An Underground Future
In his Silo book series, Hugh Howley imagines a post-apocalyptic world where the survivors of the human race are forced to live underground because the planet’s atmosphere is too ruined and toxic. They reside in a subterranean city 144 stories beneath the surface.
When one of the city’s sheriffs causes the deaths of many residents, an engineer named Juliette begins to investigate. What she uncovers are the deep and dark secrets of the Silo and the truth behind its existence.
The first two episodes of Silo will be released Friday, May 5, on Apple TV+.
