As if spending an entire episode of Top Chef with the world-famous Gaggan Anand wasn’t enough, the contestants received even more time with the restaurateur. This would be a lot less stressful because Anand wanted to hang out with the chefs to show his appreciation and give some words of encouragement. He wanted to make the most of his trip from nearly halfway around the world. It was a nice one-of-a-kind experience for everyone.
Then, it was back to business with the quickfire. Author and chef Judy Joo served as the guest judge. One of her restaurants, Seoul Bird, is inspired by the street food of Korea. For the challenge, she wanted the competitors to do their own spin on an iconic street food from a selection of 16 different countries. They should have fun with the dish, but Joo and Padma must still be able to see the original inspiration. The catch is they wouldn’t know what dish they would be cooking until they opened the passport of that country.
Things got Fast & Furious for the elimination challenge. The cast of the upcoming Fast X appeared via video to promote their film. Then the contestants were divided into three teams of three for three rounds of the mise en place relay race, something Top Chef usually saved for quickfires. The ingredients they were prepping were inspired by locations from the different movies of the franchise, and would later be used to create their final dishes.
