Channel Surfing: Awesome TV picks for the week of 06/12/2023

Our Channel Surfing TV picks have social commentary, adventure, and laughs.

With the abundance of options, let our Channel Surfing TV picks help guide you on what to watch this week. Catch up with some loveable male exotic dancers 25 years after their infamous performance in The Full Monty. Take off on more adventures with the pre The Original Series USS Enterprise in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Then, reunite with the most dysfunctional family of televangelists in The Righteous Gemstones.

The Gang is All Back

The Full Monty was a feel-good movie from the 90s that followed a group of men down on their luck. They become inspired by Chippendale dancers and decide to form a male striptease act to help earn some money. However, as the title indicates, they were not holding anything back and go completely nude.

Despite the original’s over-the-top premise, it covered many serious social issues at the time such as unemployment, body image, and working class culture. The series revisits the group 25 years later and reveals that the members are still struggling. Like the film, the show looks to explore relevant current topics while highlighting how the characters have changed over time.

Stream the entire season of The Full Monty beginning Wednesday, June 14, on Hulu.

To Boldly Go Where No One Has Gone Before

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is arguably the best Star Trek television series out right now. The spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery features the crew of the Enterprise under Captain Christopher Pike, the predecessor of the more well known Captain James T. Kirk. It has many characters that appeared from the original series from younger versions of big names including Spock and Uhura to more minor players like Nurse Chapel and Joseph M’Benga.

There was so much unresolved after the first season. The vessel needs a number of senior officers after a death, a leave of absence, and an arrest. Add in Spock’s relationship issues and you have various storylines the series can go to. Plus, you can’t forget all the space exploring adventures.

The season two premiere of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds drops Thursday, Jun 15, on Paramount+.

Filling Daddy’s Big Shoes

The Righteous Gemstones is a dark comedy created by Danny McBride that centers on a televangelist family that live lives of excess through the donations to their megachurch. In the new season, Jesse and his siblings take on more responsibilities.

The patriarch, Dr. Righteous, steps back from the day-to-day activities of the church leaving his inept children in charge. They find leading their congregation much more challenging than expected and must find a way to turn things around. It also seems an old family feud resurfaces placing them in conflict with a well-armed militia.

Season three of The Righteous Gemstones airs Sunday, June 18, on HBO.
