The biggest new video games releasing the week of 6/19/23

Check out what’s new in the world of video games this week.

Summer is here, bringing with it major gaming announcements left and right! The Summer Game Fest has been dropping news bombs just about every day for future releases, but let’s not forget about the games you’ll be playing sooner rather than later. While The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has drawn most everyone’s attention this year, June still has plenty of exciting new releases to play and fall in love with.

Let’s check out what video games are hitting storefronts this week.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Necrom — Shadow Over Morrowind (6/20)

Platforms: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S

Having already released on PC earlier this month, The Elder Scrolls Online: Necrom — Shadow Over Morrowind goes multiplat this week. It includes new areas, like the realm of Apocrypha and the giant-mushroom-filled Telvanni Peninsula, which houses the city of Necrom. Players will unlock a new class with the Necrom expansion; the Arcanist uses arcane energies, ancient runes, and lost tomes of power to wreck havoc on the battlefield. The expansion will retail for $39.99 for players who already own ESO.

Broken Spectre (6/21)

Platforms: Meta Quest

Broken Spectre is a new VR-horror game available exclusively for the Meta Quest, which has a surprisingly large player base of over 20 million users. Inspired by the horrors of John Carpenter and H.P. Lovecraft, Broken Spectre has players traversing Coldblood Mountain in search of their father who went missing 25 years ago. Michael Monello, one of the co-creators of The Blair Witch Project, worked as an executive producer on Broken Spectre, ensuring fun frights and spooky scares.

Final Fantasy XVI (6/22)

Platforms: PS5

Final Fantasy fans have waited seven long years for the next numbered mainline entry in the long-running series, and they’ll finally get their hands on it this week (if they have a PlayStation 5). Final Fantasy XVI is shaping up to potentially be one of the series’ best, promising action-packed combat, destructive Eikon abilities (XVI‘s version of summons), open environments to explore, and a revenge-fueled story. And now for my favorite sentence to write in the weekly column: a demo is currently available for Final Fantasy XVI, allowing you to try out the prologue of FFXVI before committing to purchasing it.
