Today, AIPT can exclusively show off a few preview pages for Sidney Davidson’s new Kickstarter for comic series imPURRfect.
“My art is sort of a combination of Geoff Darrow’s sensibilities with a Franco-Belgian style of cartooning that gives a light-hearted feel, which nicely contrasts the narrative,” Davidson said. “imPURRfect digs into a destructive contradiction—fear can drive attachment to others, but at the same time, the survival mentality isn’t compatible with meaningful connection. These first few pages are about creating that sense of fear and attachment between Josiah and his cat Bruno because even the most cynical and dissociated misanthrope can love a pet.
So what’s imPURRfect about?
Bruno idolizes his owner Josiah, and the peaceful, playful life that they have indoors. Tired of being cooped up, Josiah persuades Bruno to go on a walk where they cross paths with one of many beasts roaming the streets, “Fat Laila.” Traumatized by the encounter, Josiah turns to the notion that hard work and money will help them move and be safe, obsessing over motivational videos by an entrepreneur/influencer named King CEO, leaving Bruno to his own devices, which forever changes their relationship.
Davidson continued, “—It’s about relying on somebody for a sense of safety and survival, even though the relationships we all need are about so much more. Relationships demand us to be curious about other’s emotional needs and they necessitate having a creative, and open minded interest in meeting them. There are always consequences when we fall short of this, and with imPURRfect, I am creating an entertaining exploration of those consequences.”
