NYCC 2023: Monarch: Legacy of Monsters strikes a balance of the human story and the monsters

Series developers Matt Fraction and Chris Black preview Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

During the New York Comic Con 2023 panel for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, a loud and clear statement was made: “Monsters are real, and they live among us.” I was present at the event, where it was revealed that the show is set to premiere on November 17th. It takes place in the same universe as Godzilla (2014) and Kong: Skull Island (2017), and features an impressive cast including Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell, Anna Sawai, Ren Watabe, Maria Yamamoto, Kiersey Clemons, and other talented individuals.

The show is divided into two periods, separated by 70 years. It touches briefly on the events of the 2014 Godzilla film and explores how they have impacted the characters in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Additionally, the show uncovers the secrets of the enigmatic organization Monarch.

I was lucky to attend the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters press conference and panel. During the press conference, series developer Matt Fraction spoke candidly about the show, saying, “I’m passionate about building a compelling story about real people moving through the series, which is not the same thing as the films.”

Unlike other spectacle-size movies or TV shows like Godzilla, where too much focus is given to human characters, this series strikes a balance between humans and monsters that viewers will enjoy. Series creator Chris Black added to Matt Fraction’s statement by saying, ” We said early on that we couldn’t make a show that’s just about monsters, it had to be a show about people that happen to live in a world where monsters are real. Black continued, “So the focus was always on the human story we wanted to tell. We were lucky to get Kurt and Wyatt Russell to come in and play a character that spans the generations and links two stories together.”

After watching the first episode, I can attest that Fraction and Black’s words are felt throughout the show, and it is a vision you simply have to witness.

Apple TV+ and Legendary Television have teamed up to create a phenomenal series with a fantastic cast. If you’re a fan of monster movies, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is definitely a must-see. Get ready to be blown away!
