Acting as a direct sequel to the classic X-Men: The Animated Series, X-Men ‘97 picks up just a few months after the attempted suicide of Professor X, which served as the original series’ finale. However, instead of a team united in the absence of their beloved leader, the X-Men find themselves at odds with their new and uncertain leader Cyclops.
As a long-time fan of the X-Men franchise, I was transported immediately back to my childhood. From the moment the familiar theme song began, I was a kid again. 30 years later, the classic X-Men theme still delivers. However, what I truly was impressed by was how easily X-Men ‘97 modernizes the classic tale that we all know and love while preserving its essence as a whole.
Obviously, 30 years later, there are some things from the original series that needed to change. The updated animation is up to par with some of the best I have seen. The fight scenes are enhanced and are so unique that I will do it justice here. They are something you must see.
The storytelling is also something that has received a much needed boost. While the original series had its moments of brilliance, the standards of animated shows have changed drastically since the early 90s — the first two episodes delivering an extremely compelling narrative. It wastes no time in reintroducing us to our favorite mutants while also setting the stage for what promises to be an epic continuation of their saga.
The dynamics within the team itself are as compelling as ever, with almost every character getting their chance to shine at some point in the first two episodes. Cyclops and Storm stand out as two mutants who really get a chance to show off their abilities here. I personally have never seen Cyclops look so cool.
There is no shortage of iconic characters in the series. While Bishop and Morph are not new to the series as a whole, their “promotion” from supporting cast to main roster is a nice surprise. Morph’s mischievous charm and relationship with Wolverine instantly won me over. Meanwhile, Bishop’s enigmatic presence and time-traveling history only hints at some extremely intriguing storylines to come.
The dynamic relationships between the X-Men was something that the original series did not shy away from. The complex threesome of Wolverine, Jean Grey and Cyclops are as captivating as ever and with the ever looming introduction of a child into the world, their relationship will prove to be a cornerstone of the series. Magneto’s complex morality and his history with Professor X continue to be another focal point, challenging ideals of both mutants and humans alike. I’m also interested to see how his relationship with Rogue continues to develop and how Gambit fits into the mix.
Another bright spot from the series premiere is the show’s ability to continue to tackle complex themes such as prejudice, identity, and the struggle for acceptance in a way that can resonate with audiences of all ages. It has only been two episodes, but X-Men ‘97 has already proved that it will not be afraid to address these issues head-on. But, I suppose it wouldn’t be an X-Men series if these issues weren’t at the forefront.
I cannot say enough about how much I enjoyed the improvements of the action sequences. Each sequence is nothing short of spectacular and each pulse-pounding battle is choreographed with precision and flair and is expertly animated. While the result of these confrontations are never in question, the excitement is still there. I especially loved how the X-Men were able to combine their powers in ways that were not seen in the original series.
Overall, X-Men ‘97 exceeded any expectation that I had with its first two episodes. It was like getting slapped in the face with nostalgia, serving as a love letter to fans of the original series, while also serving as a gateway for newcomers to the X-Men universe. It is a true testament to the legacy of not only these characters, but the series as a whole. I have a feeling I know what the rest of the series has in store, but if these installments are any indication, we’re in for an exciting ride. My only complaint is the fact we are only getting 10 episodes in this first season.
