Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ ‘Criminal’ show to feature Charlie Hunnam

Amazon Prime’s ‘Criminal’ gets its lead actor.

Variety revealed today Charlie Hunnam will be the lead in an Amazon Prime series adaptation of Criminal. Created by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, the iconic comics series has run over five volumes, with the series continuing to expand on the universe. Pretty much the defactor crime comics creators, Brubaker and Phillips’ next graphic novel, Houses of the Unholy, is due out in August 2024.

Brubaker will co-showrunner and executive producer Criminal along with Jordan Harper. Phillips, Sarah Carbiener, and Phillip Barnett also executive produce. Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden will direct the first four episodes. Legendary Television will also serve as an executive producer. The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios.

Criminal is an ongoing noir comic series that first launched in October 2006 as a ten-issue series. I highly recommend reading Justin Harrison’s essay on the series, which you can read here.

In the piece, Justin said, “Every Criminal protagonist struggles, consciously or otherwise, with their own self-image. In some cases, it’s explicit. Coward‘s Leo clings to that epithet for a twisted sort of comfort. As long as he prioritizes saving his own skin over anyone and anything, he does not have to face the violence he is capable of. Meanwhile, The Dead and the Dying‘s Danica Briggs struggles to overcome her own traumas, and ultimately abandons the possibility of happiness for a revenge she knows will kill her.”

Harrison concludes, “Criminal as a whole is one of the form’s all-time great accomplishments.”
